Women’s Media Center Responds to NBC’s Decision to End David Shuster Suspension

February 15, 2008 (New York) – The Women’s Media Center (WMC) has been closely following the situation at NBC News, including MSNBC, and the ongoing problems the network has demonstrated in its treatment of women. From Don Imus last spring through Chris Matthews’ ongoing sexist language to the current furor over Shuster’s comments with regards to Chelsea Clinton, the network has demonstrated an inability to maintain a news product that that treats women with respect – as news professionals, as news-makers, or as expert commentators.

The Women’s Media Center joined with other women’s organizations last month to publically speak out about the situation in particular on Hardball with Chris Matthews, and we applaud NBC for responding quickly to our comments. We took note as well of their swift and appropriate response to David Shuster’s offensive remarks.

Everyone deserves a second chance, and we welcome Shuster back to the air beginning on February 22. We hope that the culmination of these incidents will be a change in the news environment at NBC, one that will honor the contributions and expertise of women and people of color.

In the meantime, the Women's Media Center will continue our mission to hold the media accountable for accurately and equitably representing women’s voices, views and stories.
